We heard some good things about the recently opened Bar Txangurro during the last weeks, so we gave it a try last Friday. The Basque venue is located at Mozartstr. 9 in Cologne, not far from where we are living. Close to the city center and nightlife areas, but a bit hidden in a side street.
As we do love tapas, the promise of a wide range of Pinxtos plus other decent dishes was something to go for. The bar features a little garden area plus two main rooms inside. We arrived past ten at night, which should be an o.k. time for a Spanish restaurant or bar. Though it wasn´t too busy outside, service inside was obviously lacking in presence. One waiter for the two rooms seems to be hardly enough. So we had to wait a considerable amount of time, before our table was even recognised.
The drinks finally arrived and Pinxtos were chosen at the bar. The quality of the Pinxtos was clearly not up to standards - not local ones and surely not Spanish ones. It was simply the kind of hurried snacks that I would not dare to serve in a Bar devoted to Basque food. We didn´t have any other dishes, but after those tapas I wouldn´t have asked for more. Or we did ask for more, a basket of bread con allioli was ordered straightaway, but never arrived. Seeing on the bill later didn´t cheer us up very much...
So from this experience I would not go there again. Especially as the area has two brilliant contenders with Boquerones and the splendid second branch of Fonda in town.
Two out of six points.
