The idea of the Optical Machines EP dates back to the year 1994, the three tracks were in fact created 1992-1993. At that time CD production was still an effort, so the EP was never released. Aswell Mike Ink of the Colognes Delirium turned down releasing them. He still owes me the demo DAT...
Arlanda is the first track of the EP, an untypical slow track for my work in those years. Experimenting with nature sounds as the "backing" orbish bits made their way onto this production. The idea of a sort of ambient EP surfaced.
Silence was basicly formed around a unusual sounding loop from a sampling CD, once again nature sounds were added and processed by a delay. Samples from a vintage CR78 were fed into the sampler, adding a nostalgic touch. The piano notes owe a fair bit to a Bowie track starting with W... Years later a TV jingle used a very similar loop, probably from the same sample CD.
Weightless is a track about ping pong playing astronauts, hence the NASA samples. People tend to mistake the ping pong noises for a strange sounding drum loop. There are two versions of this track, this is the one with the added bass drum.
A fourth track was discussed for this EP, but never made it. Maybe it will be released here later. The tracks (see section to the left for the mp3 download links, use right click / save target under) were transferred from the original DAT, so these are the raw versions. Remastered versions might be on the way...
